Of course, as I got older, it became harder and harder to find the time to write, because I was also supposed to be doing things like calculus--things that I was also good at. I offered my calculus students bonus points to write a limerick or haiku on their final exam. The book is part memoir, part homage, and part introduction to advanced calculus. At my high school, we had the option of taking either AP Calc AB or AP Calc BC. My bigger concern is when we start getting into far more advanced and abstract math like calculus or trig or the like. And the students seem to enjoy it. That sounds dramatic and over-exaggerated, but calculus has taken my lukewarm "like" for math to an absolute love! I love the way Pringles fit on your tongue. These guys are great at group theory, and seek to find and enjoy calculus of variations and solving Green's functions. And as I went on, I didn't like algebra II, or analytical geometry, or calculus, either. As such, it offers a readable balance of engaging narrative and challenging mathematics. So will data science go the same way? Posts like these make me glad that I placed out of Calculus I and II, although at times I consider what it would be like as a mechanical engineer over a biology undergrad. In fact, the need to avoid nasty calculations (for lack of a computer) has often driven discovery, leading mathematicians to find elegant symbolic techniques like calculus. I just took all those courses because I thought that's what you were supposed to do in school.
